The Art of Being Unpredictable

Being unpredictable makes you interesting.

Predictability can lead to boredom because the brain works like a prediction machine. It constantly anticipates what comes next — in movies, books, and in the people around us.

Living in one place or spending time with the same person for a long period lets us gather enough data to predict their actions. When predictions become easy, there is less novelty for our brains. Less novelty means less dopamine, fewer rewards.

A balance of unpredictability and predictability is what the brain craves — similar to gambling, where winning is not guaranteed but still possible.

If you want others to find you interesting, avoid being entirely predictable. If someone knows your next move or exactly what you will say, they lose interest over time. You may have a strong bond, but not the same excitement as before.

Switch things up with people you know well. Try new things. Make unexpected moves. It enhances your unpredictability and makes you more engaging as a person.
